Getting saves in MLB The Show 26 sounds easy until the game decides your clean ninth inning wasn't worth a thing. Plenty of players burn through innings, missions, and even MLB The Show 26 stubs chasing cards, only to miss credit because they used the wrong pitcher at the wrong time. The annoying part is that a save isn't based on vibes. It follows a set of baseball rules, and the game sticks to them pretty tightly. Once you know the situations that count, though, you can set them up on purpose instead of hoping the stat pops after the final out.
The Safe Three-Run SetupThe easiest save chance is still the one most people think of first. Take a lead of one, two, or three runs into the final inning, bring in a reliever, and let him finish the game. That's it. In a full nine-inning game, this usually means the ninth. In shorter Diamond Dynasty games, it might be the third. The catch is your lead has to stay within that range when the reliever enters. If you're up 3-0 and then score two more before the bullpen door opens, you've ruined your own save chance. It happens more often than people admit. Sometimes the best move is to stop swinging for the moon and just protect the setup you already have.
When a Big Lead Can Still CountA large lead doesn't always kill the save, but the situation needs to be dangerous enough. The key idea is the tying run. If the tying run is at the plate, on base, or waiting on deck when your reliever comes in, the game can still award a save. Say you're winning by four with the bases loaded. That's a save spot, because one homer ties it. It feels a bit strange, and yes, it's risky if you're just trying to farm stats against the CPU. Still, it's useful when you've accidentally built too much of a cushion and need to force a qualifying situation without restarting a game.
The Three-Inning TrickThere's another route that many players forget about. If a relief pitcher throws the last three innings of a game, he can earn a save no matter what the score is. You could be ahead by ten, twelve, or more. As long as he pitches those final three full innings and is not removed, he's eligible. This is probably the cleanest method in longer CPU games. Get your lead, put in the reliever early enough, then cruise. Just don't bring him in for two and two-thirds and expect the game to be generous. It won't be. He needs the full three innings to make that method work.
Don't Let the Win Steal the SaveThe other big trap is the pitcher of record rule. A player can't receive both the win and the save in the same game, so be careful if your starter leaves before your team takes the lead. If your reliever is on the mound when you go ahead for good, he's probably getting the win instead. Also, don't get cute with two outs in the last inning. The pitcher who records the final out is the one who matters for the save. If you're grinding programs while looking up the fastest way to get stubs in MLB The Show 26, treat saves the same way: set the situation clearly, use one reliever, and let him finish the job.
